Very nice to hear from a fellow and former costume designer. Apparently, there a few more of us who jumped to the psychotherapy ship than I thought. I agree that costume designers are good observers of human behavior. And after all those hours in the costume shop, we learned how to be good listeners!

I, too, was a theatrical costume designer in academia who changed careers in my 40's to school psychology. Your blog post is so insightful of the connections between these two seemingly disparate careers. Supporting actors as they develop their characters is so very similar to what I do now.

I have another costumer friend who is now a pastoral counselor after completing a divinity degree.

Costume designers are excellent observers of human behavior and personality traits.

Thanks, Angelyn. I'm glad you took the few moments required to try it. The idea came to me one day while walking from my car to the office. Moments of inspiration can come anytime and from anywhere when we're open.

Gregg, I'm not surprised that you got the help you needed with Claire. She's a terrific coach who I recommend on my website. I refer my clients to her because we are absolutely on the same page when it comes to food and feelings. With me they work on the emotional connections to overeating and bingeing. With Claire, they work on the food. With permission from the client, Claire and I consult between sessions so that we are able to provide the most effective support. It's a collaboration that we both enjoy a great deal. Claire and I are planning to offer a workshop together once we figure out the details. Glad you found her.

After years of cyclic weight gain/loss, I knew that understanding the ins and outs of nutrition was not enough to provide me with the tools to keep the weight off and break the cycles. What I needed was to develop a new way of relating to food. My answer was to hire a nutrition/wellness coach. I did, and it works. I still have a few pounds to go, but I have fun with food now and not guilt with food. The person who helped me was Claire Mandeville ( clairemandeville.com) but I can tell that you take the same approach.

Folks, if you are reading this blog, quit letting what you think you can do on your own keep you from being successful. Seriously, call one of these folks today.

Thanks for the comment on my blog post Beth. I like your analogies about texture and color and how they relate to both analysis and design.
